Breakfast of Champions 12/19: Phi Slamma Jamma II

Game of the Night

Houston 83 Kentucky 69

Hardly the upset it may appear at first, the long-dormant Houston Cougars took over this one late in the first half and never turned back. The Cougars got double figures from three players and limited basically all of UK's scoring to Joe Crawford and Jodie Meeks. Signature win for Cougars (the name still reads "Kentucky" even if the team plays like Oregon State) that will certainly help come tournament time. Meanwhile, Memphis is pissed off that will not be able rest their players and just picks fans from the crowd to play the entire CUSA schedule.

Also Intriguing

Kansas 71 Georgia Tech 66

The Jayhakws looked lights out over the weekend, so how would they respond playing a few days later across the country? With a lackluster performance (notably on the defensive end) against a bottom tier ACC squad, that's how. Jayhawks defeat Georgia Tech 71-66, but it was never easy. The Jayhawks were pretty much in control for the second half, but the Yellow Jackets actually cut the lead down to one with only :09 seconds remaing. Nice game from Russell Robinson, who led the team with 17 points.

Texas 66 Oral Roberts 56

Was the entire Big 12 in a pre-Christmas distraction zone? The Longhorns (looking extremely flat according to reader Luke) needed a strong second half from DJ Augustin just to get by ORU in Austin.

Mid-Major Spotlight

Western Michigan 57 Southern Illinois 41

Finally, the preseason mid-major darlings from Kalamazoo won a game of significance. Kyle mentioned last week on the Mid-Majority that no team's success was as dependent on their shooting as SIU. Last night? 27% from the field. That's can't-throw-it-in-the-ocean bad. And very quietly the Salukies have fallen under .500.

We are sure you have heard about Dick Vitale's throat surgery by now. Just want to say rest up and get better big guy. More on this later in the day (Dick Vitale, ESPN)

Memphis hasn't exactly been shooting the lights out this season (Dan Wolken, Memphis Commercial Appeal)
