We aren’t usually the type to pick on someone when he is down, but it’s worth noting the Baylor guard Aaron Bruce’s life been playing out like a Southwest commercial in the last week.
It all began last Saturday in Austin. Following a furious rally, the Bears cut the lead to 77-76 with :28 seconds remaining. Trying to inbound ball after a Longhorn turnover, Bruce pulled a Chris Webber Special and called a non-existent time-out. The technical foul gives the ball and the game to Longhorns, their 22nd straight against the suddenly reeling Bears.
Flash forward to Tuesday, another furious rally has the Bears ahead 91-88 in overtime at Oklahoma in a virtual NCAA Tournament play-in game. Needing to just not do anything stupid over the next 7.3 seconds to pull out the must road game, Bruce fouled Sooner Tony Crocker on a three-pointer, which he obviously drained for an eventual four-point play. Curtis Jerrells’s missed free throws a few seconds later got all of the attention, but Bruce’s dumb play set the Baylor choke in motion.
We feel bad for Bruce and have been on the Baylor bandwagon all season long, so are going to suggest that Coach Drew may want to investigate sending Bruce to the locker room with about three minutes remaining if the Bears still want to dance this season.
