Last year, before we started STF, Marco had his own blog called Just Call Me Juice. In his bracket pool that year, several of us bloggers went up against a penny, randomly flipped to provide incentive to pick well lest we lose to pocket change.
This year, we didn't want to repeat that feat, so we came up with a new idea. I now present the bracket chosen by my five-year-old son, Jack, who picked based on the classic "whose mascot would win in a fight" strategy.
Some notes:
- These picks were made using the only metric that a kindergartener can understand: whose mascot would win in a fight.
- Obviously, we struggled on the Duke choice. Eventually his head won out over his heart.
- One of the most difficult discussions we had was me trying to explain the difference between a bulldog and a retriever for the G'Town/UMBC game. At one point, he thought maybe UMBC's mascot was a weenie dog, so I wrote that on the bracket. Also confusing? A Hoosier. They were bound to lose to a razorback hog. In fact, to a five-year-old, the only thing cooler than a hog with razors on it is a hurricane.
- Speaking of dogs... He got quite annoyed with the number of bulldog fights he had to choose. Six teams use the bulldog as a mascot, and he got annoyed with them. Michael Vick he ain't.
- He laughed out loud when I said "OK, who would win between a Bulldog, and a Duck?" I think that's how we all feel about this one.
- Obviously, a hurricane can kick just about anybody's ass. He chose well given the criteria, even forgoing his Kansas indoctrination.
So here's the bracket. You have a short time left to join the STF Bracket Challenge if you think you can beat this action.

I noticed a little hesitancy with the Drake-WKU match-up. How did you explain what a hilltopper is to a 5 year old? Better - can you explain it to me?
I actually never did, I just said "a hilltopper vs. a bulldog" and I think there was some bulldog backlash by this point, because he blurted "Hilltopper!". Then he thought for a minute and said "no! wait! a bulldog".
Great.
Now I'll never know.
Does your son read Storming The Floor? I hope so. He might be the only non-STFer who still follows "Dark Secrets".
What kind of Jayhawk is this that's taking on a Titan--and winning?! Have you biased your son, Extra P?
Yes, in fact, I'm surprised the Jayhawk didn't win it all. He is obviously smarter than his old man.
What was drawn on the back side of the bracket that came up on the scan? Right where it shows Arkansas in the title match. It looks like a billiken, but St. Louis (sadly) didn't make this year's tourney.
Bulldogs and Wildcats are the most white bread boring mascots around.
Good eyes, Matt. That was my attempt to explain what a Devil is, as in Duke Blue- and Mississippi Valley State Delta-. I tell you, it was a blast.
