The Davidson Question

After reading about the arguments at the mock selection committee and even the debate in the comment section on the Monday Madness post, I’m convinced that Davidson is primed to be the most debated team of Selection Sunday. Again, this is all dependent on Davidson losing in their conference tournament and missing out on the auto-bid. At 16-0 in the SoCon already, that doesn’t seem likely. But still, the Wildcats needed to rally from 16 down on Wednesday to beat UNC-Greensboro, so it's definently not out of the question.

If the Wildcats fall in the SoCon tourney, the mid-level major program vs. mid-major power debate will be raging like it was in 2006. (Whelliston vs Packer! Ten Rounds! Fight For The Wildcats Bid!) The Wildcats really have a compelling case for (close Ls to UNC, Duke, UCLA, undefeated in conference play, scheduled for an at-large bid) and against (zero quality wins, showed that they can’t hang with the big boys) an at-large bid. I’m in the Wildcats camp only if they fall in the SoCon tournament championship game, but I can understand both sides of the argument. And I can understand everyone's desire to see Whelliston and Packer duke it out.

I really cannot see Davidson not getting the SoCon autobid. The strange thing about this discussion is that I have a feeling last year's Davidson team was better than this year's, with Curry being injured now.
If Davidson does run the table and goes undefeated in both conference and tournament, then they obviously deserve it. My friends who go to Davidson would hate me for this, but I think that if they lose in the conference tournament, as watered down as SoCon play has been this year, they don't deserve to be in the field of 64.

So if you don't beat UNC, you didn't hang with them? The game was decided in the final moments. No one in the ACC has played Duke better than Davidson. Does that mean that no one in the ACC can hang with the big boys?

No one in the Pac 10 has gotten an 18 pt lead on UCLA (and at LA!). Does that mean that no one in the Pac 10 can hang with the big boys?

More importantly, in the Packer/Whelliston standoff, I go Whelliston. After meeting him in person, I think he has a decided advantage in reach. But Packer has by far the nastier disposition, so it could be closer than we think.

Davidson should get an at large. No question about it.

Well duh!!! If they win the tournament (and the automatic bid that goes with it) then yes, they do deserve to get into the tournament.

I'd love to see 'em make it. They've been dominating that conference for years now. What they need to do more than anything is get out of the Southern and into CUSA or the Sun Belt or something. Somewhere that'll get them just a BIT more exposure.
