Remember last week when we called Stanford the #27 best team heading into the season? Scratch that. Forgot that happened. It looks like the better half of the Lopez isn't going to be starting the season for the Cardinal. Brook Lopez, offensively the better of the twins, has been ruled academically ineligible for the fall semester.
"This is disappointing for all of us, including Brook," coach Trent Johnson said in a statement. "He has fallen short on his academic responsibilities and is aware of what needs to be done in order to improve his academic standing with Stanford and our basketball program. At the same time, we feel that this could be a positive learning experience for him."
The good news for Stanford fans is that there is good chance Lopez could return for the spring semester and be ready for Pac-10 play. But without Brook Lopez in the lineup, it's hard to see where the already offensively challenged Cardinal will get enough offense to compete in the ultra-competitive Pac-10.
