STF Preseason Primer: Apostrophe Fever

During his tenure at Deadspin, us STFers found a kindred spirit in Clay Travis. While Clay's focus is generally on college football, we know from our Q&A that he loves him some basketball, too. Which he should, because his home state of Tennessee is where it's at this season.

Clay is known for mixing the enjoyable ephemera of sports with the serious aspects, something we enjoy as well. One of our favorite Claynation memes is the love of randomly-placed apostrophes that crop up in so many athlete names. Never ones to sacrifice fun in the name of productivity, we compiled this - the STF list of DI basketball players with gravity-defying commas in their names. Not counting the random O'Donnell, of course, because Irish surnames are a known quantity, and therefore boring.

D'Andre Bell - Georgia Tech
Drake U'u - Hartford
An'Juan Wilderness - Charlotte
D'Lancy Carter - St. Bonaventure
Da'Quan Cook - St. Bonaventure
De'Marion Gordon - USC Upstate
J'Covan Brown - Texas
Da'Sean Butler - West Virginia
E'Twaun Moore - Purdue
Al'lonzo Coleman - Presbyterian
Jer'Vaughn Johnson - Cal State Fullerton
Sai'Quon Stone - Southern Miss
Qa'rraan Calhoun - Houston
J'Nathan Bullock - Cleveland State
N'Gai Evans - Wright State
De'Andre Haskins - Valparaiso
Eddie D'Haiti - Youngstown State
J'Mell Walters - North Carolina Central
A'uston Calhoun - Bowling Green
P'Allen Stinnett - Creighton
Tre'Von Willis - UNLV
Da'Veed Dildy - Stanford
J'Mison Morgan - UCLA
Roge'r Guinyard - Texas-San Antonio
De'Suan Dixon - Jackson State
La'Ryan Gary - Louisiana-Lafayette
La'Shard Anderson - Boise State
De'Jon Jackson - San Diego

Honorable Mention: Jay-R Strowbridge - Jacksonville State

By far the most apostrophal players came from the Horizon League, with four entrants. St. Bonaventure had the most per school, with two fine glottal stops on their roster.

Here at STF, we bring you all of the information we can squeeze out of college basketball. Even stuff you didn't know you wanted.

St. Bonaventure was probably pretty disappointed when Da'Quan Cook showed up on campus and wasn't the real Daequan Cook. Honest mistake.

The Bonnies have to be excited about any kind of Quan they can get at this point. If I were AD there, the first thing I'd do is change that abysmal nickname, and see if pride grew in its place.

Does Roge'r Ginyard get a link merely because you didn't think that anyone would actually believe that someone could be named that?

How is it pronounced anyhow? Raj-er? Row-g-er?

Yes, Ben, that's exactly why I did it. I could get the rhythm of how to say every other name on the list except for that one. I figured in case it was just a typo on the team page, I still had proof.

Strangely enough, a few low-major programs haven't even put up their 2008 rosters yet. That dumbfounded me.
