Harvard Has Not Yet Mastered Recruiting Scandals

Strange days for the Ivy League. First, Cornell became (as pointed out by Whelliston) the first team team not to begin with a “P” to win the league title in 20 years.

Secondly, and more surprising, is that a recruiting scandal looks like it may surfaced at Harvard. Yes, you just read the last sentence correctly. Recruiting scandal at Harvard.

In an excellent piece by the New York Times (Ivy recruiting scandals are covered by intelligent newspapers!) , the paper uncovers several improprieties made by new coach Tommy Amaker and the administration, including making illegal contact with player’s parents and accepting players who otherwise would not qualify for Harvard.

“Harvard’s athletic director, Bob Scalise, acknowledged that Amaker’s staff had recruited some players with lower academic profiles than the previous staff had, but he stressed that no athletes had yet been admitted. “It’s also a willingness to basically say, ‘O.K., maybe we need to accept a few more kids and maybe we need to go after a few more kids in the initial years when Tommy is trying to change the culture of the program,’ ” Scalise said last week. “It’s a willingness to say that we really do want to compete for the Ivy championship.”

I’m guessing that eyebrows were raised when it was reveled that Harvard had a Top 25 recruiting class!! Yeah, seriously, that might bring about some questions. They may have the brains in Cambridge, but they apparently have yet to master the whole concept of cheating.

Wait....It's a violation to recruit players who otherwise wouldn't be admitted to the school? I can think of about 300 schools who are guilty of that.

It's always nice to have John Thompson's take on things. Thanks for dropping by, Coach.

jt,

One of the conditions Ivy League schools have does not permit school to recruit.

No, they're allowed to recruit. They're just not allowed to offer academic scholarships. This is a total non-story, as most Ivy League hockey fans know. These guys are on different forms of financial aid or scholarships, and many would not qualify academically for their schools.

Color me unimpressed.

If the recruits have academic indexes over 170, there's no problem. Under the new regime, all they're doing is lowering their ridiculously high standards to really high standards. I've been through the whole Ivy League recruiting meat grinder. If the academic numbers are good enough and they can offer you a good fin-aid package (which they usually do, in lieu of scholarships), it's a no brainer. All you have to do is find 6 players who have the numbers and are smart enough to realize they're gonna be set for life after going to Harvard, and you got yourself a top 25 recruiting class.

I heard something on NPR about some of the ivies preparing to offer reduced or free tuition to people from (basically) middle-class families anyway. So if that's the case, who needs a scholly?
