Breakfast of Champions: 2/27

Vanderbilt 72 Tennessee 69
UT’s reign at #1 lasted approximately 29 hours, falling to Vandy in an upset that isn’t all that surprising when you factor in the rivalry plus the Memphis hangover. The elements (#1 team on the road, conference supremacy, in-state rivalry, private vs. public school, 14 technical fouls) involved in this one made it at the very least as intense as the Memphis-Tennessee game was. Vandy takes the lead as this seasons’s Oregon/Florida team (something that needs a better name, if anyones got any suggestions)
Big man: Shan Foster 32 points
Missouri State 86 Drake 83
Could go either way with this one. Drake haters will point out that the Bulldogs have lost three of four in the Valley. I’ll lean towards the fact that the young Valley is vastly improving and that the Bulldogs have a gigantic target on their backs. Floor storming by Missouri State students well deserved.
Western Michigan 56 Northern Illinois 49
Just great to see NIU back in action for the first time since the tragedy.
Indiana 72 Ohio State 69
Dakich has mastered the three-point victory.
Big man: Bassett, 23 points
BYU 70 New Mexico 69 (OT)
Cougars lock up bid, Lobos remain on outside looking in
Big man: NM’s J.R. Giddens, 30 points
Friday, February 22, 2008
Breakfast of Champions: 2/22

Notre Dame 82 Pittsburgh 70
Gody is the star again, scoring 23 points in the victory over the Panthers . It's now a dead heat between Gody and CDR for my favorite player of the 2008 season. Irish remain unbeatable at home.
Big man: Gody 23 points, 12 rebounds
Washington State 69 Arizona State 57
Wazzou is back on a roll and quieting aiming for the #3 seed.
Big man: Low, 15 points, cool hair
South Alabama 69 Western Kentucky 64
Huge road win for the Jaguars (!), snapping the Hilltoppers 11-game win streak. Get leg up in at-large consideration in Sun Belt.
Umass 98 Rhode Island 91
The A-10 just continues to beat itself up. Rhody's once solid bid is looking very, very shaky at this point.
LaSalle 81 Dayton 78 (OT)
Again?!? The Explorers do it again! They can now assume the title of 2008 Official Bubble Buster, as they may ruined the seasons of both Saint Joes' and Dayton in the same week.
USC 81 Oregon 75
Win may have finally sealed up the Trojans' bid
Washington 75 Arizona 66
The Wildcats bid? Not so much...
Programming Notes: Lots going on in preparation for the battle of national (Memphis-Tennessee) and mid-major (Butler-Drake) supremacy.
Friend of STF David Scott is already in Memphis and will be reporting on the scene up until his courtside Posting up live-bog for CSTV begins at tip-off (they are also live-blogging Drake-Butler)
Another friend of STF, Kyle Whelliston, will be taking part in a Simmons-like mid-major marathon chat on ESPN.com tomorrow at noon.
Finally, our Bubble man/Pac-10 man BD will be live-bloggin' the Memphis-Tennessee game here on STF at 9pm. I think your social life can wait until March is over.......

Breakfast of Champions: 2/21
Miami 96 Duke 95
I usually try to keep any kind of homerism to a minimum, but coming from a family of Hurricane alumni, I’m pretty damn happy about this win last night. After years of coming this close to pulling off big upsets and statement wins, the Canes hang on after leading by 20 in the second half. Still curious as to why students were not allowed to storm the floor, but I’m still pretty happy about this . And yeah, where did Duke’s defense go?
Wildcats continue to drop winnable games on the road, now fall to third in the Big 12
Heels can now move back on to the top line with the Duke loss. Hansbrough takes POY lead with 32 points.
Virginia Tech 69
Terps may lose their tourney spot to the Canes
Vols avoid looking ahead to

Breakfast of Champions: 2/20

Indiana 77 Purdue 68
Amazing, really, how two top 15 wins in one week can suddenly make you forget about some NCAA sanctions . The Hoosiers are now back in the Big Ten race and back in the race for a top four seed with the win over the previously streaking Boilers. I guarantee that there is now a large portion of IU fans that want to keep Sampson despite the sanctions.
Big man: Injured DJ White, 19 points, 15 boards
Oklahoma 92 Baylor 91 (OT)
In a round up of the Top 10 games 07-08, OU and Baylor must be involved in at least eight of them. Down three with nine seconds left in OT, OU converts a four-point play to take the lead (Fouled by Aaron Bruce, the same Bruce that called the Webber timeout against Texas) . Then, Baylor's leading scoring Curtis Jerrells (75% FT) missed two free throws with :01 seconds left that could have won it. Also, several players were ejected in regulation. Insanity.
Big man: Blake Griffin, 29 points
Bradley 72 Drake 71
Hangover loss for the Bulldogs
Big man: BU's Jeremy Crouch, 23 points
UConn 65 DePaul 60
Huskies hang on for second straight close call

Wildcats go to 18-0 in the SoCon
Big man: Curry, 30 points

Breakfast of Champions: 2/19

Texas 77 Texas A&M 50
If it wasn't for UConn, Texas would be the hottest team in America . With wins over UCLA, Kansas and Tennessee, the Longhorns still have an outside shot at a #1 seed. And DJ Augustin is making a serious push for first team All-American
Big man: Augustin, 27 points
Xavier 81 Rhode Island 77
The Muskateers all but wrap up the A-10 with this road win. Rhody doens't have an impressive win since December.
Big man: Josh Duncan, 23 points
LaSalle 90 Saint Joseph's 89
I'm chalking this one up as one of the most shocking results of the season. The Explorers have some young talent, but I never thought they would knock off Saint Joe's at the Palestra in late February. Devastating loss for SJU's tournament resume.
Big man: Darnell Harris 21 points
Louisville 60 Syracuse 51
Cards have gone form giant disappointment to Big East co-leader. Cuse can go back to the bubble now.
Big man: Terrence Williams, 12 points
Georgetown 68 Providence 58
Much needed road win for the Hoyas
Big man: Hibbert 18 points, 8 rebounds
Longwood 96 NJIT 78
Oh Lord...... at 0-28, NJIT has just one more game to avoid the winless season.
Didn't get to link this yesterday, but here are some fantastic pics from the Cuse-Gtwon floor storming by reader Rob K. But as much as we love a good floor stormin' here at STF, and as much as I support Syracuse (sister is a senior there), I got call a foul on the Syrcuse fans for a) storming the floor against Gtown on a non-buzzer-beater and b) rushing with 2.0 seconds left on the clock. You're better than that Cuse fans...

Breakfast of Champions 2/14

No love on Valentines Day's for these bubble teams, all of which suffered devastating losses that will haunt them in March
South Florida 89 Syracuse 78
LSU 85 Florida 73
Duquesne 63 Dayton 61
Oklahoma State 93 Baylor 83
Wisconsin 68 Indiana 66
Butch's bank three wins it for the Badgers. Yeah, yesterday wasn't exactly the finest day in Indiana basketball history
Big man: Butch, game-winning bank three
UConn 84 Notre Dame 78
Huskies hold home court in battle for second best in the Big East
Big man: AJ Price, 26 points
Southern Illinois 65 Drake 62
Not totally surprising since it was in Carbondale. More curious to see how the Bulldogs react to first loss in months
Texas Tech 84 Kansas State 75
Plenty of young players + weak PG play + rookie coach = K-State being prime for a first-round upset. Heard it here first.
Big man: Voskuil, 20 points
Duke 77 Maryland 65
Unlike everyone else in the top 10, Blue Devils continue to avoid the bad loss.
Big man: Singler, 26 points
Tennessee 93 Arkansas 71
Vols show that they own the SEC
Big man: JaJuan Smith, 32 points
Temple 92 Rhode Island 89 (OT) / Xavier 62 Charlotte 60
Man, the A10 is wacky. Owls are now quietly in second place of the A10

Breakfast of Champions 2/13

Vanderbilt 93 Kentucky 52The nightmare season returns to Lexington! Just when you thought Kentucky had finally righted the ship in the SEC, they get blown out at Vandy (second worst loss in 80 years) to reignite the hatred of Billy Gillespie in his UK debut.
Big man: Shan Foster, 20 points
Purdue 60 Michigan State 54
The Boilers continue to roll behind some late threes by freshmen Robbie Hummel, knocking off Michigan State to control of the Big Ten (And they are happy about not stormin' the floor!)
Big man: Hummel, career-high 24 points
North Carolina 75 Virginia 74
Heels escape with a 1-point win at last place UVA. Carolina now officially closer to a four seed than one seed without Lawson.
Big man: Hansbrough, 23 points
Other scores
Marquette 89 Seton Hall 64
Pitt 82 Providence 63
Butler 83 UW-Milwaukee 75 (OT)
Western Michigan 78 Miami (OH) 75

Breakfast of Champions: 2/12

Texas 72 Kansas 69
Can't fault the Jayhawks too much for losing in an extremely hostile environment against a Top 15 team. Mario Chalmers had a shot to tie it for the Jayhwaks with a last second three (along with about four other treys in the final 2:00 minutes) but came up short as the Longhorns prevailed. The combined efforts of Damion James, who scored 12 points and pulled in 13 rebound all in the second half, and Justin Mason was the difference for the Horns.
Big man: Damion James, 14 points 13 rebounds
Georgetown 55 Villanova 53
If I were a Nova fan, the remote would have gone through the TV tonight. A touch foul was called on Nova about 80-feet from the basket with .01 seconds left, setting up the Hoyas for the game winning free throws. Add this to the NC State loss (similar fashion) and Nova is the offcial Snakebitten Team of 2008.
Big man: Scottie Reynolds, 24 points
Ole Miss 66 Presbyterian 55
The 11-point win over the newbie Blue Hose does little to reverse the Ole Miss freefall
Big man: Curtis, 24 points
Saint Mary's 54 Santa Clara 50
SMC has to live with the Gonzaga-like target in the WCC
Big man: Diamon Simpson, game-winning free throws.

Breakfast of Champions: 2/8
Indiana 83 Illinois 79 (2OT)
Good lord, that was an entertaining game. I'm not sure if you're going to see a more intense basketball game (on and off the court) than that one, not even in March. Hell, Gordon was shoved in the pre-game warm-ups and his parents had objects tossed at them. Tons of credit to Illini players and fans for making this one as uncomfortable as possible for Mr. Gordon (who was clearly effected by this in the first half).
As for the game, that would be a definition of a nut-kick loss for Illini fans (sorry Leitch). If Shaun Pruitt can make one of four potential game-winning foul shots in regulation and overtime, the Illini win and Gordon cries all the way back to Bloomington. Instead gets the last laugh, banking in a late three to send it to overtime while Armon Basset scored 11 points in overtime to steal the win.
UCLA 67 Washington State 59
Bruins pull away in the second half, Cougars now face virtual must win vs. USC on Saturday
Big man: Darren Collison, 18 second-half points.
Pittsburgh 55 West Virginia 54
Ramon's wide-open three at the buzzer wins it for the Panthers. Mountaineer fans officially out of furniture to burn following a Pitt loss
Big man: Ramon, game-winning three.
Xavier 70 Saint Louis 68
The A10 upset bug almost struck again, but Derrick Brown's tip-in with 0.1 remaining won it for the X-men.
Big man: Brown, game-winning tip-in
Stanford 72 Oregon 43
You knew that Oregon would struggle without Brooks this season, but the fall-off has been drastic.
Big man: Robin Lopez, 15 points
Thursday, February 7, 2008
Breakfast of Champions: 2/7
Duke 89 North Carolina 78
This game turned out exactly as we expected (or more accurately, how ACC correspondent Corn predicted). Duke shoots the lights out (13 treys), Hansbrough gets his (28 points), Duke's D shuts down Ellington (6 points). Excellent performance by Greg Paulus, whose improvement this season has been a direct correlation with Duke's improvement from last year. We'll hold off judgment on the Heels until Lawson is healthy.
Big man: Paulus, 18 points (6 threes)
UConn 63 Syracuse 61
One of these days, Jonny. One day you're going to finally hit that game-winning shot. Nice rally by the Cuse, but Huskies make it six straight. Thabeet gets our vote for most improved player in college hoops.
Big man: Thabeet, 7 blocks, many others altered
Notre Dame 95 Seton Hall 69
Irish could be battling UConn for second place in the Big East
Big man: Harangody, 22 points
Baylor 80 Texas Tech 74
Nice effort by the Red Raiders in Pat Knight's debut.
Big man: Jerrells, 16 points
Maryland 70 Boston College 65
Still cannot believe I'm saying this after watching them play in December, but the Terps might be the third best team in the ACC.
Big man: Vasquez, 25 points
Texas 64 Oklahoma 54
Bad news for OU, Longar Longar out for the season with broken leg
Big man: Abrams, 22 points
Duquesne 102 Saint Joseph's 88
These puzzling A10 results are starting to rival the Big East
Big man: DU's Shawn James triple double (17, 11, 10)
Wednesday, February 6, 2008
Breakfast of Champions: 2/6

Tennessee 104 Florida 82
Gators led early, then Vols turned on the jets to hit triple digits, likely winning students some free tacos or something
Big man: Lofton, 26 points (finally)
Drake 73 Illinois State 70
This team can seriously do no wrong at this point. Down nine at the half, Josh Young catches fire to keep the streak alive.
Big man: Young, 17 second half points
Butler 71 Valpo 68
Saw the end of this one and still have no clue how the Bulldogs pulled this one out. Just like Drake, appear to have nine lives down the stretch.
Big man: Pete Campbell, game winning three
Georgetown 63 South Florida 53
Summers career high saves Hoyas from this sleepwalk
Big man: Summers, 24 points.
Ohio State 65 Michigan 55
You won't be finding any countdown clocks for the basketball version of this rivalery
Big man: Hunter 15 points, 12 boards

Breakfast of Champions 2/5: Bob Knight Edition

It appears as if Bob Knight's long, strange trip through the college basketball universe has finally come to a close. Quite possibly the most polarizing figure in all of sports, Knight decided to step down as coach of Texas Tech, handing the reigns to his son Pat. If this is truly it for Knight (I'm leaning towards yes), he'll finish with 902 wins, the all-time leader among coaches, and with three national championships while at Indiana. (I'll suggest checking out fantastic IU blog Inside the Hall for their take).
For the college basketball fan, there is really no middle ground on Bob Knight. You either love him for being a passionate hardass who can instill the proper discipline needed to build a winner on and off the court. Or you hate him for tossing chairs, disrespecting players/officials/administrators/university officials/media members/neighbors and getting a bit angry when his team loses to Purdue.
With this news occurring at the start of the so-called dead period in sports, the Knight story is going to be beaten to death in the media. So we'll try to leave the Bob Knight news to this post and focus on the things actually happening on the court. So love him or hate him (or kiss his ass, as he would suggest) you have to admit that the college basketball world will be a little less interesting without the General around.
Saint Mary's 89 Gonzaga 85 (OT)
Good lord, that was worth staying up for. The battle between Jeremy Pargo and Patty Mills was my favorite one-on-one duel of the season thus far. SMC thought they won it with the Mills +1 with :23 seconds left, but Pargo (27 points) responded to send it to OT. One of the five most entertaining games all season.
Big man: Mills 23 points, Golden 6-6 from behind the arc.
Saint Joseph's 77 Villanova 55 (from the Palestra)
Hawks use the Holy War to end Nova's Big 5 win streak and stick a fork in their tournament hopes
Big men: Rob Ferguson and Pat Calathes, 20 points
Kansas 90 Missouri 71
Some revenge from football season
Big man: Brandon Rush, 18 points
Louisville 71 Marquette 57
Cards rout in Milwaukee? Sure, why not? Like anyhitng has made sense in the Big East all season
Big man: The entire Louisville defense
Longwood 78 NJIT 68
Thought tonight was the night for the Highlanders, but instead they are off to 0-24.

Breakfast of Champions: 2/1

Wisconsin 62 Indiana 49
Loss at Madison in understandable, but we're officially worried about Gordon's wrist.
Big man: Hughes 16 points
Cal 69 Washington State 64
Shocker from Wazzou.... second upset in less than a week is more a sign of a strong Pac-1o than an overrated WSU
Big man: Ryan Anderson 27 points
Arizona 80 USC 69
Loving the Zona - Sweet 16 pick if Budinger plays like this
Big man: Budinger, 29 points
Duke 92 NC State 72
For second straight game, the Blue Devils start slow (down 9 at half) only to explode in the second half.
Big man: Paulus 22 points
UCLA 84 Arizona State 51
Yikes, having second thoughts on ASU's credentials after the latest thud
Big man: Shipp, 21 points
North Carolina 91 Boston College 69
I think Boston fans can get over this one
Big man: Hansbrough 18 points
Thursday, January 31, 2008
Breakfast of Champions: 1/31

Kansas State 84 Kansas 75
Michael Beasley (who knew had the long range game?) and Bill Walker combine for 47 points, as K-State knock off previously unbeaten Kansas at home for the first time in this guy's lifetime (24 years). This will, no doubt, be the most deserved floor storming of any fanbase all season. So it may not be a victory in Africa, but I think Wildcat fans will take it.
Big man: Michael Beasley, 25 points
Memphis 89 Houston 77
Cougars made it a game early by pressing, but as usual, CDR's took over.
Big man: Chris Douglas Roberts, 30 points
Texas A&M 80 Texas 63
Much needed win by the Aggies, probably confirms that texas really isn't Top 10 material
Big man: Josh Carter, 19 points
Drake 75 Creighton 65
That would be the final nail in the MVC coffin for the Bulldogs
Big man: Josh Young, 24 points
Ole Miss 74 Vanderbilt 58
Vandy takes the lead in "Biggest Clemson-like Collapse of 2008"
Big man: Chris Warren, Ole Miss, 20 points 1o boards

Big man: Vernon Maklin (?) 19 points
